The most common question we get when we tell people our specialty is voluntourism, is "What is that?" Simply stated, voluntourism is a form of tourism that involves volunteering for a charitable or humanitarian cause while traveling. Voluntourism can be a great way to give back to communities while experiencing a new culture, but it is important to approach it with sensitivity and caution.

One of the main benefits of voluntourism is that it allows travelers to make a positive impact in the communities they visit. Projects can range from building homes, teaching English, or working on conservation efforts. The experience can also be incredibly rewarding for the volunteer, providing a sense of purpose and personal growth.

However, it is important to be cautious when choosing a voluntourism program. Not all organizations are created equal, and some have come under scrutiny for their practices. Some programs may be more concerned with profit than actually making a difference in the community, or may not have a long-term plan for sustainable development. It is important to thoroughly research the organization before committing to a program.

It is also important to approach voluntourism with sensitivity and respect. Volunteers should not see themselves as saviors or impose their own beliefs and values onto the community they are working with. Instead, they should aim to learn from and collaborate with the community, and prioritize their needs and desires.

Another aspect to consider is the impact on the local economy. While voluntourism can be a great way to help a community, it can also have negative effects on local businesses if volunteers are providing services for free that locals would normally be paid for. It is important to strike a balance between helping the community and supporting the local economy.

Because of our unique focus, we are able to help clients who are interested in voluntourism do the research and choose a reputable organization that aligns with their values and goals. We also remind them to approach the experience with humility and respect, and be mindful of the impact on the local community and economy. With careful consideration, voluntourism can be a great way to make a positive impact while traveling. It gives you a perspective that simply visiting a destination doesn't. Who knows, you may be impacted even more than the community you're serving - and you just may take home some amazingly unexpected experiences and memories!
